The Sacraments of Christian Initiation

The Sacrament of Confirmation

267. What is the essential rite of Confirmation

The essential rite of Confirmation is the anointing with Sacred Chrism (oil mixed with balsam and consecrated by the bishop), which is done by the laying on of the hand of the minister who pronounces the sacramental words proper to the rite. In the West this anointing is done on the forehead of the baptized with the words, “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”.
In the Eastern Churches of the Byzantine rite this anointing is also done on other parts of the body with the words, “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit”.

Fr.William's Parish Newsletter

I will be away until Thursday, so there will be no Mass from Monday to Wednesday this week. Mass on Thursday will be in Dornie at 6pm, and I have an assembly in Broadford school on Friday at 9:20am, so I will celebrate Mass in Broadford after that, at 10:30am.

Next Sunday is Education Sunday, and there will be a special collection for the work of SCES, (Scottish Catholic Education Service), who have been working hard over the past few years on the new Catholic RE syllabus, “This Is Our Faith”, which is being used in all Catholic schools from now on. The collection also contributes to Priests for Scotland, The Scots College in Rome, and The Programme for the Training of Permanent Deacons . Please be as generous as you always are

Thanks to those who have commented on the Financial Statement I posted last week. I think it is important that everyone knows what is being spent, and what our income looks like. I would like to thank you for your continued generosity, and encourage everyone to keep giving to the Building Fund. In particular, I urge as many people as possible to sign up to Gift Aid, and to think of good ways we can increase our fundraising.

I have ordered copies of 'My Day by Day', which gives the daily readings for Lent. I think it is a good idea to read the daily scripture readings even if it is not feasible to get to Mass during the week.

There are still some of the new Missals left, but we may need to order some more. I am sorry they took so long to arrive. They are £8 each. The Gaelic hymns CDs are £12 each.

To our visitors: you are very welcome to stay for tea/coffee and cake after Mass. Please be generous in giving to our second collection for the Building Fund. We need to pay back quite a lot of money for the church.

The Sacraments of Christian Initiation

The Sacrament of Confirmation

266. Why is this sacrament called Chrismation or Confirmation?

It is called Chrismation (in the Eastern Churches: Anointing with holy myron or chrism) because the essential rite of the sacrament is anointing with chrism. It is called Confirmation because it confirms and strengthens baptismal grace.

Fr.William's Parish Newsletter

Mass on Wednesday will be in Broadford at 6pm. Mass on Friday will be followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please note that I have changed the default morning Mass time to 10:30am, to give people from outlying areas more time to get here.

I have ordered some more copies of the Gaelic hymns CDs. So, do not worry if you did not get one of the first lot. They are £12 each.

I have put a financial statement for the year ended 30th November 2011 on the back of the partition along with a sheet explaining major items of income and expediture. I would like to thank you for your continued generosity, and encourage everyone to keep giving to the Building Fund. In particular, I urge as many people as possible to sign up to Gift Aid, and to think of good ways we can increase our fundraising.

Lent is just a few weeks away... and I would like to have a House Mass every week during Lent. If you would like a Mass during Lent, please let me know.

I have ordered copies of 'My Day by Day', which gives the daily readings for Lent. I think it is a good idea to read the daily scripture readings even if it is not feasible to get to Mass during the week.

The new Missals have arrived, and are available from Helen Gilpin. They are £8 each.

To our visitors: you are very welcome to stay for tea/coffee and cake after Mass. Please be generous in giving to our second collection for the Building Fund. We need to pay back quite a lot of money for the church

The Sacrament of Confirmation

265. What place does Confirmation have in the divine plan of salvation?

In the Old Testament the prophets announced that the Spirit of the Lord would rest on the awaited Messiah and on the entire messianic people. The whole life and mission of Jesus were carried out in total communion with the Holy Spirit. The apostles received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and proclaimed "the great works of God"
(Acts 2:11). They gave the gift of the same Spirit to the newly baptised by the laying on of hands. Down through the centuries, the Church has continued to live by the spirit and to impart him to her children

Fr.William's Parish Newsletter

I will be going to Kishorn for Mass on Thursday. This involves getting the train from Kyle at 17:15, and being collected by someone at Strathcarron station. I will need to be back at Strathcarron for the train at 19:43. It seems like a fairly easy solution to the problem of getting Mass. Lets see how it works, and please throw any problems or questions my way.

Please note that I am changing the default morning Mass time to 10:30am, to give people from outlying areas more time to get here.

To those people who dedicated pot plants for the church over Christmas; many thanks for your contribution to the parish. I am going to take all remaining plants to Home Farm tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for their generous contribution to the Diocesan Collection for Justice and Peace. We collected £102.

I have 4 copies of a CD of Gaelic hymns made for our diocese. If you want one, speak to me about it. I can also order more if people want them.

Please could I ask those people who brought pans, plates and other items of crockery or cutlery to take them home as soon as possible... or they might take a wrong turn and end up in a charity shop. Oops.

To our visitors: you are very welcome to stay for tea/coffee and cake after Mass. Please be generous in giving to our second collection for the Building Fund. We need to pay back quite a lot of money for the church.

The Sacrament of Baptism

264. What is the meaning of the Christian name received at Baptism?

The name is important because God knows each one of us by name, that is, in our uniqueness as persons. In Baptism a Christian receives his or her own name in the Church. It should preferably be the name of a saint who might offer the baptised a model of sanctity and an assurance of his or her intercession before God

The Sacrament of Baptism

263. What are the effects of Baptism?

Baptism takes away original sin, all personal sins and all punishment due to sin. It makes the baptised person a participant in the divine life of the Trinity through sanctifying grace, the grace of justification which incorporates one into Christ and into his Church. It gives one a share in the priesthood of Christ and provides the basis for communion with all Christians. It bestows the theological virtues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. A baptised person belongs forever to Christ. He is marked with the indelible seal of Christ(character)

Fr.William's Parish Newsletter

There will be no Mass in the parish on Friday, as I need to be away at a meeting in Paisley. I have decided to move the Mass in Dornie to Wednesday, at the usual time of 6pm, because Thursday evening is no longer possible.

Thanks to everyone who participated in Thursday's Funeral Mass for John Bell, especially Fr James for agreeing to preside at the Mass, and to those who worked so hard preparing the purvey after his burial. Despite the sadness of the occasion, it was a fitting send-off for a man who has contributed such a great amount to the life of the parish. We continue to pray for the repose of John's soul, and to offer Judith and the family the prayers and support they need.

To those people who dedicated pot plants for the church over Christmas; many thanks for your contribution to the parish. You are free to take yours away with you, but if you want to leave it behind, I will take all unclaimed plants to Home Farm to cheer up somebody's room.

There will be a Special Collection this Sunday. Bishop Toal writes:

“The special collection on The Feast of the Epiphany, Sunday 8th January, the Church’s Day of Prayer for Justice and Peace, supports the Diocese’s contribution to various Commissions of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, in particular the Commission for Justice and Peace, and also the Commission for Pastoral and Social Care, which includes the National Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults, as well as the Scottish Catholic Inter-Diocesan Tribunal. All of these make a vital contribution to the Church’s mission in Scotland in the areas of Justice and Peace and your generous support will be most welcome.”

To our visitors: you are very welcome to stay for tea/coffee and cake after Mass. Please be generous in giving to our second collection for the Building Fund. We need to pay back quite a lot of money for the church.
