From the Catechism

137. Why are the missions of the Son and the Holy Spirit inseparable?

In the indivisible Trinity, the Son and the Spirit are distinct but inseparable. From the very beginning until the end of time, when the Father sends his Son, he also sends his Spirit who unites us to Christ in faith so that as adopted sons we can call God "Father" (Romans 8:15) The Spirit is invisible but we know him through his actions, when he reveals the Word to us and when he acts in the Church.

Pluscarden Lectures

Pluscarden Pentecost Lectures will take place at Pluscarden Abbey from 2nd - 4th of June. The topic of this year's lectures is: Holistic Ambiguity: A Western Theology of Nature. In a series of four lectures, Fr. Tom Herbst O.F.M. will trace the developments towards an integrated Western theology of nature from pagan philosophy through Scripture and Patrists to a modern and post-modern understanding.
Fr. Tom Herbst teaches at the Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury.

Lectio Divina

Lectio Divina is an ancient way of praying with the scriptures with 4 stages: Reading, Reflection, Response and Resting. Praying in this way should lead you to a contemplative connection with God in your everyday life. The focus of any questions should enable you to live with the scriptures throughout the week.
Lectio Divina is primarily a method of prayerful reflection, it is not scripture study but rather enables you to experience the power of God’s word today.

STAGE 1: READING

In the first stage you do what the early monastic communities did: you read the text out loud and listen. Notice what words or phrases stay with you or strike you. If you are reading in a group it is good to read the text a second time with a different voice, sometimes another word or phrase strikes you.

STAGE 2: REFLECTION

When you have become aware of your word or phrase then you move on to explore how this relates to and connects with your life. Questions you may ask are: What is this word calling me to? How do I live the message of this word that has been given?

STAGE 3: RESPONSE

In the third phrase of the lectio you respond in prayer, this prayer is short and brief. It can be an expression of thanksgiving, or petition or praise.

STAGE 4: RESTING

Finally, you take the word that has been given to you and repeat it silently in your heart, so that you move into a contemplative awareness that God is present to you. You may use the word that has been given to you to connect back into the presence of God during the day or the week by simply repeating your phrase.

All are invited to experience this type of prayer as part of our Lenten prayer effort. We shall meet on MONDAY in Portree at 7.00pm
in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. After some introduction, the meeting will last about 30 minutes.

Mothers' Day

There will be a fundraising Coffee and Cake morning after Mass in Portree on Sunday 22nd March. Keep your mum sweet. Donations of baking gratefully accepted. Please lend your support.
Proceeds will go to the Building Fund

From the Catechism

I Believe in the Holy Spirit
136. What does the Church mean when she confesses: "I believe in the Holy Spirit"?

To believe in the Holy Spirit is to profess faith in the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity who proceeds from the Father and the Son and "is worshipped and glorified with the Father and the Son". The Spirit is "sent into our hearts" (Galatians 4:6) so that we might receive new life as sons of God.

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, a day of Fasting and Abstinence. The period for fulfilling the Easter precept of Holy Communion begins. A plenary indulgence is available for all those who devoutly make the Way of the Cross. Please note the times and location of Masses: as is our traditional practice we shall begin Lent together as a parish in Broadford and the Easter Triduum will be celebrated in Portree. The effort of travelling to Broadford can be a symbol of our Lenten effort of self denial

From the Catechism

135. How will Christ judge the living and the dead?

Christ will judge with the power he has gained as the Redeemer of the world who came to bring salvation to all. The secrets of hearts will be brought to light as well as the conduct of each one towards God and towards his neighbour. Everyone, according to how he has lived, will either be filled with life or damned for eternity. In this way, "the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13) will come about in which "God will be all in all" (1 Corinthians 15:28).

Roll and Sausage

Most Christian communities celebrate Pancake Tuesday. We are delighted to say that here on Skye we are once more pioneers - we celebrate Roll and Sausage Sunday . After Mass in Portree this Sunday there will be a Roll and Sausage Breakfast - a wee fund-raiser for the Building Fund. All are encouraged to attend - please give your support.
As well as providing a pleasant brunch it gives people the opportunity actually to meet and speak to one another!

SCIAF WEE BOX APPEAL

Every year thousands of Scots help SCIAF bring fresh hope to some of the poorest people in the world by filling a WEE BOX with money. Last year, we raised more than lb800,000 to help communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This year, with your help, we hope to raise even more.

Many people chose to give something up during Lent - like alcohol, chocolate or their daily bag of crisps - and put the money they save into their WEE BOX. Others hold events like coffee mornings or karaoke nights in order to raise money. It's a simple idea but it really works.

This year's WEE BOX campaign looks at how climate change is affecting people in developing countries. Each year, more and more families are left homeless and hungry because of droughts, floods and hurricanes. Find out how your money helps and what wee changes you can make to combat climate change.

There are loads of fun ways to fill your WEE BOX. For inspiration, check out SCIAF's A-Z of fundraising ideas or take a look at what some of Scotland's top celebrities and sports personalities are giving up for Lent.

Remember, every penny counts. Whatever the size of your contribution, it will help to make a BIG change to the lives of people around the world.

The WEE BOX Big Change Campaign runs from 25 February to 9 April. So join us this Lent. Fill a SCIAF WEE BOX - it could help us save a life.

Thought for the Week

Sincerity is fidelity. Man's perfection is a must-be. He does not merely have, he is a vocation. Sincerity is fidelity to one's vocation since it is fidelity to oneself

Thanks

Mgr James wishes to thank all who have been so helpful during his period of slight handicap. Help will have to continue for another wee while, but it looks as if progress is as it would be expected. His next target is to be able to drive.

Baptisms

Congratulations to Wiktoria Kaczkowska who was baptised in Portree on 28th December.

Congratulations also go to Heather Isabella Innes who was baptised in Broadford on 24th January.

We wish their families every blessing and assure them of the support of all. We look forward to seeing them grow in faith when they prepare for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

The number of baptisms in the parish is a real sign of hope!

From the Catechism

134. How will the coming of the Lord in glory happen?

After the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world the glorious coming of Christ will take place. Then will come the definitive triumph of God in the parousia and the Last Judgment. Thus the Kingdom of God will be realised

Not another Sausage and Roll Breakfast !! Oh yes it is!!

Next Sunday after Mass in Portree there will be a sausage and roll breakfast before we enter the season of Lent.

These occasions are very popular and thanks are due to the cooks who labour over hot grills to cook the sausages!

Red sauce and Brown sauce are always available and there may also be some pickle this time!

Come and enjoy
